Job Descriptions - Board of Trustees

The members of the Leadership Development Committee have been working on reviewing Job Descriptions for First Jefferson. Our priority in this endeavor was the descriptions for those serving on our Board of Trustees:  

President
Vice President
Treasurer
Secretary
Members-at-Large (3)

Boards of Trustees have six primary functions:
Visioning
Policy-making
Stewardship
Sponsorship
Advocacy
Consultancy
Visioning and policy-making are in the forefront of the Board’s work, done in collaboration with the congregation’s professional staff.
Stewardship of the church’s assets, held in trust, requires deep ethics and morals.
Sponsorship – collectively the Board of Trustees are the most generous supporters of the congregation in time and/or money.
Advocacy of the church and its ministry.
Can provide counsel and encouragement to staff, at staff invitation, from their particular area of expertise.

Board of Trustees qualifications:

Deep commitment
Generous support of the church
Communication, management and conflict resolution skills
Mission focused
Grounded in UU principles, values and faith development.
Grows spiritually-grounded leaders.
Tries to think in contextual, multicultural, generational, or systems sensibilities.


JOB DESCRIPTIONS

PRESIDENT
Time requirement:  10 – 20 hours per week
Duties:  
Parliamentarian – chair the Board of Trustees whose responsibilities are visioning and policy-making, stewardship, sponsorship and advocacy of First Jefferson UU Church. Convene and chair congregational meetings per bylaws.
Chief Advocate – represents the congregation as an institution both to its own members and to the wider community.
Appoint Committee Chairs
Serving with Grace – continuing personal, UU leadership development

VICE PRESIDENT
Time requirement:  10 – 20 hours per week
Duties:  
Attend all Board of Trustees and congregational meetings.
Convene committee of committee chairs to maintain church calendar and report on strategic plan
Convene Board of Trustees or congregational meetings when the President of the congregation is unavailable per bylaws.
Accept a Task Force chair position, as necessarily convened by the Board of Trustees, to manage an activity or conversation per current vision and policy goals; to be completed within appointed term.

TREASURER
Time requirement:  5 – 10 hours per week
Duties:  
Has custody and responsibility of all church funds. Works with the Finance Committee to account and report.
Attend all Board of Trustees and congregational meetings.
Provide monthly reports to the Board of Trustees and annual reports to the congregation per bylaws.

SECRETARY
Time requirement:  5 – 10 hours per week
Duties:
Attend all Board of Trustees and congregational meetings
Take meeting minutes and publish to the congregation
Document meeting quorum
Make and preserve all official records of the church
Conduct official correspondence as necessary
Responsible for the corporate seal and for deeds and evidences of church property

MEMBERS-AT-LARGE (3)
Time requirement:  5 – 10 hours per week
Duties:  
Attends all Board of Trustees and congregational meetings.
Accepts Task Force chair position(s), as necessarily convened by the Board of Trustees, to manage an activity or conversation per current vision and policy goals; to be completed within appointed term.
