Opening Words

Opening Hymn

Chalice Lighting and Responsive Reading

Leader: We come to this time and this place
Response: To rediscover the wonderous gift of free religious community;
Leader: to renew our faith in the holiness, goodness, and beauty of life;
Response: To reaffirm the way of the open mind and full heart;
Leader: To rekindle the flame of memory and hope; and
All: To reclaim the vision of an earth made fair, with all her people one.

Love is the doctrine of this church. The quest of truth is our sacrament. And service is our prayer. To dwell together in peace. To seek knowledge in freedom. To serve others in community. To the end that al souls shall grow into harmony with creation. Thus do we covenant with one another.

(Tune: the Tallis Canon)
In greening lands begins the song
which deep in human hearts is strong.
In cheerful strains your voices raise,
to fill the whole spring world with praise

Choral Response

Prayer invites God to be present in our spirits and in our lives. Prayer cannot bring water to parched land, nor mend a broken bridge, nor rebuild a ruined city, but prayer can water an arid soul, mend a broken heart and rebuild a weakened will. (Abraham J. Heschel)
