This Week’s Events
Sunday February 7, 2010
Bible Work Bench: 9:30 a.m. in Jagger's
Library. This Bible Study seeks to break up traditional ways of relating to the Bible and to open up
the imaginative, creative, and unexpected. As opposed to
searching for absolute
and
immutable ?truths? that we must obey, or at least
"believe", rather we look for the questions that the
stories, parables, sayings raise that were important in
Biblical times and which can be as important for us
today. There is no requirement that you 'know' anything
about the bible. We are not the First Jefferson 'Bible
experts'. The reason we like this curriculum is because
it allows us to approach these scriptures in a
non-threatening way. We don't look for answers, or even
consensus. We don't debate. We just want to investigate
what this book is.
You don't have to 'read in advance',
but here are the verses we will discuss this week:
Isaiah 6:1-8 (9-13).
Next week's verses: Luke 9:28-36, (37-43).
Everyone is welcome. See you there!

POTLUCK SUNDAY – FEBRUARY 7!
We had a good turnout for the first potluck of the year on January 3. It’s a great
opportunity to meet new friends and enjoy a meal with familiar ones. However, the turnout of potluck dishes didn’t support the number of eager potluck diners, leading to last-minute forays for fried chicken and salad.
We had about ten home-made offerings, and about as many purchased ones. Irene Forrester’s bean soup is sure to bring us all good luck for the new year, but we aren’t all great cooks like Irene, so I thought you might like a few suggestions for easy (and frugal) potluck dishes.
For a great potluck we need salads, casseroles, vegetables, breads, and desserts. Coleslaw and pasta salad are quick and easy, and deviled eggs are a popular choice. Almost any potato or rice casserole goes over well, especially ethnic recipes. If you’re short on time Sunday morning, there’s probably a brownie mix in the back of the cupboard that would make a great addition to the dessert table.
If you get to church on February 7th and suddenly realize that you’ve forgotten to bring a dish, come join us anyway, but drop a few dollars in the basket to defray the cost of those last-minute food runs.

You are invited to join the Women's Alliance on Tuesday, February 9 to see
outstanding art at the DFW Airport,
Terminal D. Arranged by Marianne Herrmann. Our docent is the Art Program specialist. The tour starts at Terminal D at 11 a.m. If you like to go by carpool, please meet at church at 10 a.m.; if you go to the terminal by yourself, please follow the instructions below and plan to be there at 10.55 a.m. We will need to go through security with our guide and have to bring a state issued I.D. (driver's license) or passport. Please do not wear anything that contains metal (it will set off the alarm) and wear shoes you can take off easily. Head to Terminal D through the toll plaza on International Parkway. Follow the signs to Terminal D, on the third floor there is two hour parking. Park towards the middle where you can walk across the bridge and head into a door near the Grand Hyatt entrance. There is an information booth inside the doors. Our guide will meet us there. If the cars entering through the toll plaza use the non-toll tag lanes, our guide can provide a pass to get out for free. There will be no charge for the tour. We can eat lunch at the Grand Met Restaurant in the Grand Hyatt which is the only restaurant accessible to us in this terminal. The charge for soup or sandwich is reasonable and the atmosphere is super. All interested women are invited to participate. The tour is really wonderful and I hope many can come. We will walk about 60 minutes, but a smaller tour will be available for people who are limited. Please let Marianne Herrmann know, if you plan to come or if you have questions (817-275-8092).

Adult Religious Education
On next Wednesday,
February 10, we will
continue with our educational programming for adults. Join us after vespers for
Renewal, a program about
spiritually-inspired environmental work being done in
the United States. Last Wednesday we learned about
Jewish children and young adults discovering their faith
in new ways through the Teva Learning Center and Adamah.
We're still discussing ways
that we, as individuals can work to reduce our negative
effect on the environment. On February 10 we plan to
find out about how the persistence of Buddhists
in California is helping to save trees, and about the fight of an economically-disadvantaged community against the companies poisoning their environment in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The sections
are independent, so don't worry if you miss a week - come learn with us!

In honor of Evolution Weekend and a great love story, I offer reflections on the new look at how Darwin struggled to come to terms with his discoveries and the beliefs of his beloved wife. (Warning: This story of Darwin offers radical ideas such as the absence of God. The just-released movie of this story is only in a few cities in the United States. Let’s see if we can bring it to Fort Worth!)

Religious Education for Children and Youth
VALYUUS:Connecting Kids and Adults
Through the Written Word.
Are you interested in creating a welcoming home for the children in our congregation? Want an easy, no-pressure way to connect one-on-one? A chance to do something enriching, simple and fun, as well as increase enjoyment of the fine old tradition of letter-writing? Join the VALYUUs program at First Jeff! All it takes is a few minutes a week for about six weeks and the willingness to enjoy all the ice cream you can eat! Curious?
One of our beloved traditions here at First Jefferson UU Church is our tradition of matching younger and older members of the congregation for a penpal exchange that we call VALYUUs. (In creative UU fashion, that acronym translates to Village Adults Love Young UUs!). This wonderful program was originally conceived by Amanda Robinson and has been run for the past four years by Irene Forrester as a gift of love to her community. To quote Amanda, "Think intergenerational Secret Santa + pen pals, and you've got the idea!" Adults from the congregation will be paired with children and youth in the RE program, who won't know who their adult is (there's the Secret Santa part). They will exchange notes, letters and trinkets (there's the penpals part).
Sign-ups for the program begin the February 4. We'll put up mailboxes Sunday, February 14 & Mar 28. We'll have a special ice cream social to reveal identities and celebrate. You won't want to miss out on this opportunity to express your VALYUUs!

First Jefferson Business
Grou nds for Thought…Grounds for Action
The Courier sometimes features a column introducing us to new members
of First Jefferson. Over the years, some of these people have indicated
that one of the first attractions for them was the church’s beautiful
grounds. While we await the discovery of a new Grounds Committee Chair
Person to follow in Judy Butler’s path of flowers, ivy, shrubs and other
beautiful flora, hands less skilled at gardening can be of help. Trash
and fallen limbs need to be picked up regularly. Outdoor ashtrays must be
emptied. Dead things need to be cut. When spring arrives, weeding,
watering and trimming are of utmost importance. Judy prepared a detailed
list of grounds duties before she moved away. Jimi Davis is willing to
help novices get started with some of the tasks that do not require a
particularly green thumb. We can work with your schedule. Please contact
Jimi at jcdflowers@att.net or 1-817-408-7953 (evenings or Sundays) if you
can help.
CHILDCARE POSITIONS AVAILABLE
Childcare worker
shifts are Sundays in the nursery 9:30 a.m. until
end of service and Wednesdays 6:30 p.m. - 8:45 p.m.
The Wednesday shift includes kids up to about 12
years old. There are also occasional events
throughout the year. Must be over 16. Pay for
under 18 is $6.00/hour, for over 18 is
$8.00/hour. Must pass a background check. This
would be perfect for a retiree who likes kids
and wants to get out of the house now and again.
Or for anyone who could use an extra $40 or $50
a week. Call or email me if interested or
pass my information to anyone you think would be
interested. You don't have to be a member of the
church.

Eastiside Ministries (ESM) – WE CAN HELP:
A February 3 article in the Star Telegram reminds us that one in eight residents of Tarrant county received emergency supplies from the Food Bank last year. We can help:
• Use the Albertson’s charity cards in the Souper Bowl of Caring. The cards are on the literature table in the lobby near the pamphlet pole and our poster. Present the cards at the Albertson’s check-out counter and a percentage of your total purchase will go to ESM.
• Donate items to ESM. Look for the poster at the front end of the literature table to see what items are most needed. Starting Feb 15 we need donations of pull-top food items for people who are homeless, hygiene items for men and women, baby-toddler clothes, birth to 24 months. The pull-top items and hygiene kits are good class projects.
I will deliver the items you bring. Leave the labeled bagged or boxed items in the bin in the lobby photo alcove. Cheers to all who have been helping Eastside! You make a difference!
- Pat Naney
Notable Quotable
Time was to change my ideas about God, the devil, the Bible, and the Sabbath; but integrity, honesty, truth-telling,
and the overwhelming sense of the sovereignty of whatever made and governed life, no matter how named, were in my guts
as in my mind, and not to be ousted.
